WebRoots Democracy launches ‘Unmasking Facial Recognition’ project

WebRoots Democracy has launched a new project ‘Unmasking Facial Recognition’ which will explore the implications of police-use of live facial recognition technology for minoritised communities. In particular, it will be focused on the potential consequences for people of colour and Muslims in the UK.

The project is being funded by the Joseph Rowntree Reform Trust and the findings will be published in a report later this year. It comes as police forces across the UK begin experimenting with facial recognition surveillance techniques. The Metropolitan Police began deploying the technology in London, operationally, earlier this year.
