Prisoner Voting

The Scottish Government has launched a consultation on extending the right to vote to prisoners sentenced to short sentences. The proposal relates to elections to the Scottish Parliament and local government in Scotland. Their consultation aims to look at how to ensure compliance with the European Convention on Human Rights and is seeking views on a) the appropriate length of the sentence and b) the practical issues associated with giving some prisoners the right to vote.

WebRoots Democracy does not currently have a position on this and we are keen to hear your views, not just in relation to Scottish elections but to elections across the UK. We will include these thoughts and comments within our submission to the Scottish Government and as part of any further research we undertake on this subject.
